This week’s episode – as I’d listened back to it before I posted it – may be one of my favorites I’ve ever presented to you. It’s mostly jazz – very little big band, not much real Broadway – but, loaded with great performances – some of them are live, too.

If you listen to this show this week, you’ll hear:

  • Helen Merrill
  • Coltrane doing a 22 minute live version of ‘My Favorite Things’ in a small club in Lower Manhattan in 1965. STUNNING!
  • A tribute to some great jazz guitarists in Les Paul, Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, Grant Green & Chet Atkins.
  • Nat Cole & Johnny Hartman, per usual.
  • Nina Simone
  • Oscar Peterson
  • Sarah Vaughan
  • Bill Eckstine
  • Bobby Darin
  • Miles Davis
  • Cannonball Adderly
  • Coleman Hawkins & Ben Webster – The former solo & the duo together, separately.
  • A trio of Chet Baker & Van Morrison songs
  • I close with Van Morrison singing & Chet Baker playing ‘Send In The Clowns’ together.  Also, STUNNING!

Enjoy!

This week’s show is dedicated to the piano – as they have 88 keys & I’ve done 88 shows.

If you like Basie, Ellington, Errol Garner, Fats Waller, Harry Connick, Oscar Peterson or Bill Evans…then you’ll LOVE this show!

It clocks in at just over 3 hours & I am certain you’ll love it.

ENJOY!

This may be one of my favorite shows I’ve done. In addition to other amazing artists that you’ll hear today, here’s a quick snapshot of the special folks that most of this show is dedicated to:

Duke Ellington – 3 different tunes from 3 different eras of his career.
John Coltrane – Nearly 50 minutes of some of my favorite Coltrane.
Stephen Sondheim – What I’d call the best of Into The Woods from the Broadway cast album.

Enjoy!

Also, the trailer for the film, ‘Into The Woods’ can be seen here!

This week’s episode is all about autumn & Broadway. I was having a conversation with some friends – old & new – and we were discussing the new Into The Woods film that’s set to come out soon. (I’ll do an Into The Woods special next week!)

I was discussing how Sondheim is so perfectly suited to his time period. Most art is.

So, in addition to some tremendous standards, I bring you about 1/2 of Sweeney Todd & a bit of Andrew Lloyd Webber. (This will also be the last show in a while that I close with The Afghan Whigs!)

This week’s show is all uptempo, except a spot of ‘Autumn in New York’ by Lady Day. Otherwise, we’re all in swing mode around here.

Enjoy!

The day before we left for Ireland, we found out that our friend Ed Schmall had passed away some time over the summer. We were close with him, but we also knew he had a busy summer on tap. It was busy for a 42 year old, let alone an 82 year old. So, we didn’t find out that he’d died until September.

Very much of this show is dedicated to Ed Schmall. He’d have loved the fact that we made the amazing trip that we did to Ireland & that we had such a gorgeous summer here in New York.

I just wish he were still here to have experienced it all…

Enjoy this show!

NY Standard – Episode 83 – Ballads

This week’s show is dedicated to the ballad.  The beautiful, beautiful ballad.  To me, ballads are the best songs…they say so much, evoke so much, they allow us to see & feel things inside ourselves that most uptempo numbers just don’t.

Joan Rivers died earlier this week, Robin Williams died about 3 weeks ago, Bobby Womack died several weeks before that & some friends have had some losses in their lives of late.

The best remedy for the blues is more blues…for a while anyhow.

So, I bring you 3 hours of some of my favorite ballads of all time.

Enjoy.

This week’s show is a mostly swingin’ affair with some ballads in the mix.  Ballads, to me, represent the changing season from Summer to Fall & Winter.

You’ll hear from Ellington, Eckstine, Hartman, Cole, Helen Merrill & so much more!

Enjoy!

This week’s episode of NY Standard is dedicated to a handful of artists.

Ella, Coltrane, Sinatra, Les Paul, Johnny Hartman & Nat Cole.

There’s also a wildcard appearance from Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys – who I have somehow completely avoided for the last 2 years.

Enjoy!
